Dennis began researching the economic of abortion in 1992 when the abortion toll had reached 32 million and he calculated that the demographic impact was like destroying our 27 largest cities in a nuclear war. That toll is now approaching 50 million, and is compounded by the impact of more efficient contraception. Both affect the supply-demand equation on which economics depends.
In an exchange in Barron's in 1997, he was one of the first to predict the imminent collapse of the stock market bubble which occurred 3 years later. He currently predicts serious muting of the current recovery as the Baby Boom generation begins to retire.
The Abortion Bomb, An MBA Special Report by Dennis M. Howard, connects the current economic malaise and the end of the secular bull market to the fundamental demographic trends that foreshadow an economic decline that threatens to be as serious as the Great Depression. He demonstrates convincingly how the current demographically-driven collapse in consumer demand parallels similar declines that led to the Depression of 1929-1938 and the Recession of 1974-1982.

A new analysis of abortions and live births among minorities in New York City has profound implications for the fight against a new anti-life ordinance recently passed in New York City. (NYC #371)
Euphemistically called "the Pregnancy Service Center Bill," the law targets pro-life women's resource centers and favors pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood. The bill is designed to cripple pro-life pregnancy counseling centers by dramatically increasing their costs and opening them to penalties of $1,000 per violation and six months in jail.
By passing the one-sided anti-life measure, the New York City Council has moved New York beyond being the "abortion capital of the world" into an entirely new category.
The question is: Does this law make New York City Ð with its large minority population Ð complicit in the genocidal mission of Planned Parenthood?
The World Trade Center disaster was certainly the most unforgettable genocidal act of terrorism in recent history. But does the more persistent pro-abortion movement hold even greater terror for New Yorkers?
A careful analysis of abortions and live births in New York over the last decade shows that indeed it does. The analysis is based on the Summary of Vital Statistics, City of New York, 1990-2009, published by New York City itself.
Startling Findings
The most most startling finding is that there are currently 65% more abortions in New York City than deaths from all other causes.
In 2008, there were 54,193 deaths from all causes and 89,469 induced abortions. New York is killing babies 65% faster than old age, disease, accidents, and murders combined.
Other findings confirm the genocidal character of the abortion industry: There have been 151 times as many Black abortions in New York City since 9/11 as there were victims at the World Trade Center on 9/11. That's like four new WTC tragedies every year.
Meanwhile, the total of all abortions in New York City since 9/11 -- Black, white, Hispanic, and other -- was 367 times the number of WTC victims. That's like having three new WTC tragedies every month since 9/11.
Lynching is considered an infamous form of genocide in America. But when compared to all reported lynchings of Blacks between 1864 and 1968, there have been 101 times more Black abortions in New York City in the last 11 years than lynchings of Blacks in the 103 years after the Civil War. In short, abortion is killing Blacks 1,000 times faster than lynching did.
Why doesn't this arouse the conscience of the nation?
According to Walter Hoye of Union City, California, who heads the Issues4Life Foundation there, "Racism is not dead in America, neither is Margaret Sanger's Planned Parenthood vision. I am weary of Planned Parenthood's rationalization for government funding. Funding Planned Parenthood with U.S. taxpayer dollars is like justifying the use of tax dollars to help the Ku Klux Klan buy rope to lynch innocent people."
The NYC data confirms this. Currently, 60% of all Black pregnancies end in abortion, compared to 40% for Hispanics and 20% for whites. In short, Black babies in New York City are aborted at three times the rate of whites, and Hispanic babies twice as often as whites.
Realistically, there is no way this could happen without deliberate targeting of minority populations. Since its beginnings under Margaret Sanger, the mission of the abortion movement has been based on the eugenic idea of eliminating Òless desirableÓ populations.
Alarming Decline In Live Births
An even more significant indicator for the future of the Black community in New York is their dramatic decline in live births. Since 1990, the number of live births among Blacks has dropped almost in half -- by 45.9%.
Since 2000, Blacks have had 154,000 more abortions than live births. Both the reduction in births and the high rate of Black abortions reveals a population in sharp decline.
If current trends continue, live births among Blacks will be cut in half again within another generation. On the other hand, live births for Hispanics remain steady, while among the Asian, Pacific Islander, and Indian population, live births have doubled over the last 21 years.
Over the next 30 years, these trends will radically transform the New York political landscape. Whites and Hispanics will hold their own, while Blacks lose population and political and economic clout. Meanwhile the Asian, Indian and Pacific Islander population will become a much more powerful part of the political and economic scene.
No breakout is available for the Muslim population, but it is safe to assume that the United States is not exempt from the demographic trends evident around the world. Currently, Muslim countries enjoy 5 times the rate of natural increase in population than the average Western country. They don't need a war to achieve demographic dominance in the last half of the 21st Century. The reason: We abort our babies by the millions. They don't.
This difference also assures that the Muslim segment of the US Black population will grow in size and influence over the next 30 years. Unless Black Christian churches unite in opposing abortion, these trends will not be easily changed.
Passed on the same day the Supreme Court voted 8-1 in favor of the free speech rights of the Westboro Baptist Church, the Pregnancy Service Center Bill set up a conflict that will almost surely lead to an embarrassing defeat for the city before the same court.
Yet the City Council voted lopsidedly 39 to 9 against pro-life free speech -- with 5 Republicans and 4 Democrats dissenting. One Council member abstained.
Chris Slattery, president of EMC Expectant Mother Care and a leader in the fight against the ordinance, admitted that he has three choices: "Change the way we do business, take them to court, or do both."
Unfortunately, these "choices" will make the work of pro-life pregnancy resource centers enormously more expensive. To avoid impact from the ordinance, EMC and others will have to become medical facilities staffed and run by full-time nurses and doctors.
The centers may also have to fire their current staff of experienced pregnancy counselors, some of whom have been on the job for ten years or more.
Pursuing the legal route will also cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to EMC and the pro bono legal centers who will be there to help them bear the brunt of the fight.
Both courses of action will raise the cost of saving babies dramatically. And that seems to be the main objective of the pro-abortion forces behind the bill, including NARAL, Planned Parenthood and the Democratic majority on the Council.
The idea is to raise the cost of pro-life pregnancy counseling services far beyond the ability of small, independent resource centers to afford them. And do it with the help of taxpayer money. Last year, Planned Parenthood received $360 million in taxpayer funding.
A Sign Of Pro-Abortion Desperation
However, a recent New York City poll found that 67% of all New Yorkers -- including 57% in the sample who identify themselves as "pro-choice" -- believe that far too many abortions occur every year in their city. And a whopping 81% of those surveyed admitted they were totally unaware of New York's high abortion rates.
No wonder: New York's huge media establishment largely buried this story. Even conservative channels like Fox gave it no special play. Yet this is a perfect set up for a major battle in the struggle to win hearts and minds of fair-minded Americans who share our conviction that the future of America is seriously threatened by 1.2 million abortions a year.
That's a struggle pro-lifers are confident that they can win.
First, we have the facts on our side. All the pro-abortion force have is the fading appeal of empty feminist rhetoric of the 1960's, and the enormous burden of disproving the terrible social, economic and moral consequences of abortion on demand.
As theologian Frank Sheed once said, "Any system based on a denial of human nature is doomed to failure." He was talking about Communism … years before any one else predicted the demise of the former Soviet Union. But his statement applies equally well to Malthusian population scaremongers, and left wing abortion advocates.
What Should Be The Pro-Life Response?
1. We need to rally behind the beleaguered New York pro-life pregnancy centers like EMC with our prayers, our voices, and our financial support.
2. The vast array of pro-life organizations across America need to work and pray for unity and solidarity across racial and religious lines. The left has managed to impose its ideology on the majority through a clever coalition of diverse groups that rely on undemocratic block voting. Without unity and solidarity, that combination will be hard to beat.
3. We also need to fight a better Òair war.Ó Abortion will not be defeated without a major effort to reach young people before they confront the challenges that face young adults of all races and religions today. The number of abortions begins rising around age 15 to 19, and peaks around age 25 to 30. Unless young people receive preventive education in early adolescence, it rapidly becomes too late to reach and persuade them.
4. We need to press the legal fight. A similar ordinance in Baltimore has already been ruled unconstitutional. This one will no doubt fail, too, but in the meantime victories may be partial, costly and inconclusive. This fight could take a year or more to work its way through the courts.
5. There is a bright side. If pro-life women's resource centers are forced to become professional medical facilities, that could lead to more direct competition with Planned Parenthood. From a strategic point of view, pro-life centers that provide a full range of services to women and families could give Planned Parenthood real competition for taxpayer money.
6. We need to take off the kid gloves in the cultural war. We will need to paint New York as the pro-abortion police state that its current leaders have elected to make it. And we'll have to sustain that campaign until this bill is withdrawn, defeated, or ruled unconstitutional.
7. We'll need to encourage people to take whatever other action against that they can.
• If you're a tourist, go someplace else. If you're planning a business meeting or an event, take it elsewhere.
• If you live in the metropolitan area or come for a visit, avoid its theaters, restaurants, night clubs, hotels to the best of your ability.
• If you're traveling, do your best to skirt its airports, rail and bus stations.
• If you live or work in the city, cut back your spending to absolute essentials until this law is defeated or ruled unconstitutional.
• Let everybody know why you're doing it. Write to Mayor Bloomberg. Tell him why you no longer love New York. And tell him to repeal this awful law.
• By all means, pray 24/7 for its defeat or repeal. If this kind of law moves to other major cities, it will be the end of the road for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in America.
This bill will increase the city's costs for enforcement and litigation, and accelerate the economic and social costs of abortion. It's a disaster for the babies, for the courageous pro-life folks whose only job is to help women keep their babies, and for the city itself.
Is this what the voters of New York want? Is this what will bring jobs and prosperity back to New York? As someone who grew up in New York, I don't think so.
